PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Don't be a victim of unshielded CSST. PYROTHOR is the world’s first and only aftermarket HIGH Temperature, fire and lightning protection side entry jacket that retrofits any brand, type or make of CSST. PYROTHOR’s patent pending dual component side entry jacket system wraps your existing CSST in a continuous conductive shield — a flexible Faraday cage that keeps storm energy on the outside of the jacket instead of on your gas line.
The FLEX-SHUNT™ system starts with the pickup jacket at the iron pipe or gas manifold junction, then continues into the propagation jacket that covers the rest of the run to the appliance. Together they form one unbroken conductive surface around the CSST. Storm energy redistributes across the outside of that surface — the same principle that keeps you safe inside a car during a lightning storm — so the gas line inside stays shielded.
The pickup side entry jacket measures 1.5 ft long and is fitted around the iron pipe / gas manifold CSST junction while the propagation side entry jacket comes in 3ft and 5ft lengths and spans the length of the CSST to the appliance. Both the pickup and propagation FLEX-SHUNT™ jackets maintain high Voltage electrical continuity by means of wide conductive interlink 'cuff' terminals.
Both jackets are made from metallized fiberglass with a rubberized silicone layer providing excellent high temperature insulation and high voltage conductivity properties. The pickup jacket has a special inner conductive fabric layer made of low impedance, highly conductive fibers made of Silver (Ag), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni) and Tin (Sn) in various combinations.

If you are a homeowner or business that has natural gas, you should count yourself lucky. Piped natural gas is freedom…freedom from life threatening power outages caused by severe winter polar vortex events or tropical hurricanes. However, the enhanced quality of life that natural gas brings is not without its risks. At PYROTHOR we believe it is a property owner’s right to fully understand the fire risks of current flexible gas piping technology, question current industry science and determine for yourself the safest way to protect yourself from CSST lightning fire failures. “Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing” or “CSST” refers to any type of flexible or semi-rigid tubing or piping, which is used for transporting explosive fuel gases such as natural gas inside homes and businesses. The construction of CSST is very simple. The inner tubing walls are made of corrugated metal such as stainless steel with a thickness of less than 10 mils (roughly the thickness of 4 sheets of paper) in order to make it flexible. To electrically insulate and protect the inner thin corrugated metal tubing from damage, an outer abrasion resistant layer made of plastics such as polyethylene (PE) or non-conductive carbon-based polymer / resin such as PVC fully encloses the inner stainless steel tubing. Typically the color of the outer polymer insulation layer is yellow or black and is known as yellow CSST or black jacketed CSST.
First introduced in Japan in the 1980s as an alternative to rigid iron pipe to prevent damage and leaks during earthquakes, CSST came to America in the early 1990s. CSST quickly became the first choice for indoor fuel gas plumbing by building contractors. Compared to rigid iron piping, CSST’s flexibility = lower install time = higher profits for contractors. In the US alone as of 2012, the NASFM (National Association of State Fire Marshals) estimated over 1 BILLION FT of CSST has been installed in over 7 MILLION buildings. It is now 2026 and most likely this number is close to double the 2012 figures. The same is true for Europe as well. CSST is now the #1 CHOICE for fuel gas plumbing worldwide!
Unlike black iron pipe, a typical CSST home install requires a separate run for each appliance. For example, a large furnace in the attic, hot water heater in a utility closet, stove in the kitchen, a BBQ grill on the patio and a fireplace in the living room for example will require five separate CSST runs made via manifold splitters. With black pipe, the plumber may use only one run of 1" pipe and then use T-joint splitters to the various appliances located throughout the house or commercial premises.
Therefore, the requirement of one home run per appliance significantly increases the number of feet of CSST piping in any given building. Multi-occupancy residential units and larger homes with multiple hot water heaters etc. will typically have a network of CSST transporting pressurized natural gas throughout their homes hidden behind drywalls, basement and attic no different from a network of electrical wires or telecom cables.
Despite its advantages, CSST has one major vulnerability built into its design. CSST is a thin-walled metal tube — thinner than four sheets of paper — wrapped in an insulating polymer jacket and connected at one end to iron pipe buried in conductive soil, with no external shield between the tube and the electrical environment it sits in. CSST pipes are vulnerable to indirect (secondary) lightning ground currents even if the actual lightning strike is a mile away. That CSST can fail catastrophically during lightning storms is well documented. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has put out a consumer safety warning video on the dangers of CSST. Major insurance companies such as Nationwide Insurance has a webpage warning consumers about the dangers of CSST. Many US States such as Delaware and Massachussets warn about the dangers of CSST fires and indirect lightning strikes. Even though CSST is a conductive metal tube that directly couples with the earth's crust and transports explosive fuel gas, during all the years of International standards development since the 1980s, curiously no testing for the effect of lightning currents on CSST was ever done.
Earth is a capacitor and has a vertical potential gradient even in fair weather. This gradient gets amplified during lightning storms. When the electrostatic surface charge builds up between the earth's crust and storm clouds, it effectively makes the CSST piping, an extension of capacitor earth — a tubular capacitor, storing the electrostatic energy on the surface area of any given section or length of the CSST tubing. The cloud potential is taken on by all loose, ungrounded metal objects such as roofing nails, screws, ungrounded pipe sections, metallic frames etc., inside a home or building. Once the vertical electrostatic cloud to ground potential exceeds the dielectric breakdown voltage of the outer protective YELLOW polymer layer, dielectric failure occurs resulting in a plasma arc that discharges the entire electrostatic energy stored along the length of the CSST. This creates a hole in the CSST tubing, allowing pressurized fuel gas to escape. If the plasma arc is energetic enough, the escaping gas ignites, and produces a blowtorch-like flame that can lead to catastrophic fire damage and potential loss of life or property. Lightning currents contain very fast rise times and significant high-frequency components. Due to the skin effect—where high-frequency currents tend to travel along the outer surface of a conductor—the thin wall of CSST can be particularly vulnerable to burn-through even if the lightning strike happens as far as three miles away.
THIN-WALLED METAL CSST IS A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE RF (RADIO FREQUENCY) CURRENT CONDUCTOR FOR HIGH-FREQUENCY LIGHTNING GROUND CURRENTS DUE TO THE SKIN EFFECT.
CSST PHYSICALLY AND ELECTRICALLY COUPLES TO EARTH GROUND POTENTIAL THROUGH A LARGE-AREA UNDERGROUND GAS PIPING NETWORK AND THE AC GRID ELECTRICAL GROUNDING NETWORK (BONDING).
INSULATED CSST ACTS AS A TUBULAR, EARTH-COUPLED CAPACITOR THAT BECOMES CHARGED BY LARGE-AREA ELECTROSTATIC FIELDS GENERATED BY THE PRESENCE OF STORM CLOUDS.
THUNDERCLOUD-INDUCED LARGE-AREA ELECTROSTATIC FIELDS ENERGIZE A HOME’S CSST GAS LINE NETWORK.
DETONATION EVENT = DIRECT OR INDIRECT LIGHTNING STRIKE GROUND CURRENTS = GAS LEAKS, FIRES, PROPERTY DAMAGE, LOSS OF LIFE.
Therefore, the requirement of one home run per appliance SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES the total length of CSST installed within a building, increasing potential fire risk and stored electrostatic energy — creating a LARGE-AREA TUBULAR CAPACITOR NATURAL GAS PIPE NETWORK.
In the case of identical Tract housing, the CSST tubular capacitor networks inside each individual home are virtually identical and all are connected in parallel, electrically coupled to the earth’s crust with identical soil conductivity conditions. When lightning storms pass overhead, all of these CSST tubular capacitor networks will charge up. Multiple houses in the same neighborhood have gone up in flames, as you can see from this news report from Texas.
DANGER TO NEIGHBORHOODS: Thus the most dangerous aspect of these CSST lightning induced fires is the fact that they occur at high frequency during storms. The problem is that in any neighborhood with high winds during a storm, a CSST lightning induced fire can rapidly spread to neighboring properties before firefighters can even arrive on the scene. If it were during a hurricane or high-precipitation tropical storm, an entire neighborhood can burn down in a matter of hours because of high winds and first responders have no way of responding in time. In this regard, unshielded CSST installations pose a risk to not just the homes they are installed in, but the entire neighborhood as well.
The CSST lightning fire problem is significant enough for the CSST industry to come up with their own integrated lightning protection alternatives. The first of these is Metallically Shielded CSST: Sold under the name flashshield by the Gastite corp, it incorporates a conductive metallic shield between polymer layers. By the manufacturer's own admission, the product is based on aerospace technology, in particular flashshield is based on the design of fuel lines used in aircraft. In any aircraft the aluminum skin or conductive layer underneath the composite skin serves as the primary faraday cage protection against lightning strikes. Is your house built like an aircraft, covered by an aluminum skin or a conductive metallized composite layer as in the case of lightweight composite aircraft? Is your house flying between 15,000 to 30,000 ft isolated and decoupled from the earth’s crust? Aerospace engineered aircraft fuel hoses are not designed to be plugged directly into the earth’s crust. They are meant to be housed inside an aircraft and the skin of the aircraft is the actual faraday cage that protects against lightning currents and atmospheric high voltage electrostatic fields. The aircraft meshwire integrated fuel hose is designed to protect against electrostatic charge buildup inside the engine chamber and fuselage because the air is highly ionized at flying altitudes.
CRITICAL FLAWS GASTITE FLASHSHIELD:
Conductive jacketed CSST stands for Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing with a conductive jacket. The conductive jacket is made of a conductive thermoplastic polymer that acts as a pseudo faraday cage as it is supposed to prevent static electricity buildup, but the conductive jacket itself is highly vulnerable to 120/220V household AC current according to the National Association of Fire Marshals. More importantly the dielectric charge buildup on the entire length as a result of the earth’s vertical potential buildup during a storm is not eliminated. So again we have the same scenario as in tract housing where charge builds up across all homes but discharges only via one or two homes dumping the entire parallel networked tubular capacitance energy into a few localized or even a single pipe causing a failure and fire. Furthermore, the failure of the conductive jacket to withstand 120/220v AC currents in order to reduce lightning failure risk defeats the purpose of having a protective insulated jacket to protect the CSST in the first place. From an engineering point of view, the trade-off is unacceptable and this is a deeply flawed solution to eliminating CSST lightning fire risk.
Bonding and grounding of CSST is a pseudoscientific procedure added to the building code to provide false reassurance to consumers with yellow CSST that there is a quick fix. Not only does it not eliminate the CSST lightning risk, bonding and grounding actually increases the risk of pinhole leaks and explosive CSST fires. The fact that CSST bonding does not work has even been covered by NBC News. The problem with CSST is not arcing between conductive grounded objects in the home. It is the problem of arcing between grounded objects like CSST and ungrounded objects like roofing nails that take on cloud potential. Equipotential bonding guarantees CSST failure by ensuring that CSST charges up with ground potential during thunderstorms, because all bonded and grounded objects will experience high voltage ground potential rise!
PYROTHOR FIRE AND LIGHTNING SHIELDING JACKET FOR CSST: PYROTHOR takes the opposite approach to bonding and grounding. Instead of tying your gas line into your home’s electrical ground — which is what puts ground potential onto the pipe in the first place — PYROTHOR surrounds the pipe with its own continuous conductive shield, isolated from your home’s electrical grounding system. The pipe is covered, not connected. Underground and above ground telecom cables, just like CSST, are affected by lightning transients and ground potential rise. The only difference is that unprotected telecom cables will result in dropped calls and possible damage to electronic equipment connected to the cable but unprotected CSST will result in explosive natural gas leaks and catastrophic home fires. But CSST is not telecom cable, and nothing built for cable solves this problem. There are fundamental differences between telecom cables and CSST networks transporting natural gas inside a home.
PYROTHOR is the world’s first removable side entry fire protection and lightning shielding jacket for CSST. It is a dual component flexible Faraday cage design, patent pending, that fits any and all brands, types and makes of CSST — installed over the gas lines you already have, without repiping. The retrofit shielding jacket stops your CSST from charging up like a capacitor during a storm, because the charge collects on the outside of the shield instead of on the pipe.
Yes. CSST is a serious fire risk. A simple YouTube search will show the seriousness of the CSST lightning induced fires. Insurance companies such as Nationwide have blogs warning about the dangers of CSST lightning fires. CSST is a global product and fire risk from lightning strikes is a worldwide problem recognized by The International Association of Fire Chiefs. CSST failures are documented in national reporting, and virtually every major insurance company has sued every major CSST manufacturer for fire related subrogation damages. The bottom line is that CSST tubing poses a substantial and unreasonable risk of death or personal injury, and none of the companies have formally warned the public of the risks associated with this product. Meanwhile, it is well documented that CSST gas lines can fail catastrophically as a result of indirect lightning ground currents. The dangers resulting from CSST and lightning strikes have resulted in CSST briefly being banned in Lubbock, Texas and the CSST industry had to pass a state law to overturn the ban. CSST-related fires have killed firefighters in the line of duty. Howard County Lieutenant Nathan Flynn died fighting a CSST fire in 2018. Frederick County Captain Josh Laird died in another in 2021. The ATF Fire Research Laboratory conducted a multi-year study of both deaths and published its findings, and in 2022 Maryland passed a law named for Laird and Flynn restricting the CSST that can be installed in new and replacement gas piping. Civilians have died too: Brennen Teel died in a CSST fire in Lubbock, Texas, in a case that drew a three-month NBC investigation and led the city to briefly ban CSST before the industry secured a state law overturning it. This is not a theoretical risk. It is a documented one, with names attached.

No! PYROTHOR is a side entry jacket and retrofits any make or type of CSST and in most cases you don't have to repipe your home. There are some situations where you may need to repipe the CSST gas lines in your home or business.
PYROTHOR is made from multilayered metallized fiberglass fabric with a silicone rubber coating — a material family proven for decades in foundries and welding protection, engineered here into a conductive shielding jacket for gas piping. The difference is simple. The industry’s answers add conductive material to the pipe — mesh layers and conductive jackets that can themselves be energized. PYROTHOR goes the other way: it shields the pipe from the outside and keeps it out of the electrical path entirely. Your gas line stays a gas line, not part of an electrical circuit.
In a natural gas powered home, conventional fires are high risk because the fire or ensuing high temperature can destroy the property if exposed to CSST lines, releasing explosive pressurized natural gas. PYROTHOR jacket is made from the base material used in industry standard welding aprons, designed for splashing molten metal and sustained radiant heat. As a homeowner, what this means to you is, an added layer of fire protection shielding around the most dangerous component in your home: the flammable CSST gas pipelines powering your gas appliances and heating your home. In addition to lightning shielding protection, the high temperature, flame protection provides you an extra layer of safety for your property and loved ones. For example, in the event a conventional fire engulfs your home and CSST lines, PYROTHOR shielding jacket adds a layer of high temperature shielding between the flames and your gas lines, buying time for the fire department to arrive or for you to evacuate your family and pets before your home turns into a roaring inferno once the CSST gas lines are breached!
Please note: PYROTHOR is not a magic 100% indestructible fireproof material. If your house catches fire, PYROTHOR shielding jacket will delay the time it takes for the fire to reach the CSST gas lines it is protecting. If you want 100% indestructible fireproof shielding material we recommend you contact Area 51 and ask to speak to the research program director for your needs.

The global Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) market is currently valued at just US$ 201.8 million in 2020 and projected to reach US$ 278.3 million by the end of 2027, growing at a mere 4.6% CAGR during 2021-2027.
CSST SHIELDING MARKET: In the United States, approximately 500,000 new homes per year have CSST installed in them. As of 2012, an estimated seven million homes in the U.S. had CSST installed. Since 1989, approximately one billion feet has been installed in residential, commercial and industrial structures. As of 2023 the figure is closer to two billion feet of unshielded CSST. The average lifespan of CSST is around 30 years. Virtually all homes with CSST built in the early 90s to early 2000s will need to have their CSSTs repiped and shielded with PYROTHOR’s protective shielding jacket.
In a time of global economic downturn, the demand for retrofit CSST shielding will generate new demand for CSST from both new and existing homes. If you are a CSST manufacturer, PYROTHOR has the know-how and a portfolio of patent pending technologies to create customized value-added aftermarket CSST lightning shielding jacket solutions that will differentiate your product from your competitors.

CSST LIGHTNING SHIELDING JACKETS WITH INTEGRATED NATURAL GAS, CARBON MONOXIDE AND SMOKE SENSORS THAT CAN DETECT GAS LEAKS AND FIRES. CSST gas lines are also highly vulnerable to localized heat sources that can occur in homes such as a small localized fire in the attic or basement caused by faulty electrical circuits for example. High temperatures quickly melt the CSST insulation layer and rupture the thin corrugated tube resulting in the pressurized natural gas becoming an accelerant that can cause destructive catastrophic damage to a residential or business property.
PyroThor’s cost-effective retrofit lightning protection jacket system for CSST can be integrated with fire, smoke, gas leak detection sensors and alarm systems that can also be used with any flexible CSST fuel pipe as well as conventional solid iron pipes, connector fittings, valves and manifold splitter junctions. PyroThor smart CSST fire and lightning shielding jacket comprises a plurality of natural gas, carbon monoxide and fire / smoke sensors embedded into the jacket sleeve. A plurality of point thermistor temperature sensors can also be embedded into PyroThor’s pickup and propagation jacket sleeve along its length to detect abnormally high temperatures and fires.
PYROTHOR CSST LIGHTNING SHIELDING JACKET WITH INTEGRATED LINEAR HEAT DETECTION:
PyroThor’s value-added CSST lightning shielding jacket comes with an integrated fire and heat detection system that also includes one or a plurality of linear heat detection cables that run along the length of the CSST line and physically integrated into the outer layer of Pyrothor shielding jacket sleeve.
Linear heat detection cables detect heat conditions anywhere along the length of the cable. The typical linear heat detection cable is comprised of two conductors such as zinc or copper plated steel conductors, individually coated with a heat-sensitive thermoplastic polymer engineered to melt at specific fixed temperatures. Once the polymer melts in the presence of a heat source, the conductors come into electrical contact with one another, the control panel triggers sound alarms and activates the gas mains shut off valve cutting off the flow of natural gas. PyroThor’s integrated heat detection lightning protection jacket also protects against damage initiated by a physical force such as breakage caused by cutting or puncturing of the CSST line during renovations or as a result of storm damage caused by hurricanes or falling tree limbs.

COUNTERSTRIKE'S SEMI-CONDUCTIVE JACKET BURNS WHEN EXPOSED TO HIGH VOLTAGE ARCING AND IS HIGHLY VULNERABLE TO 120V/220V AC CURRENTS.
We are a small team of engineers with over two decades of experience designing and installing custom high-voltage, high-current plasma ignition systems for large drag racing engines. A critical component of high-energy ignition systems is the shielding of fuel lines and ignition cables to prevent electrostatic discharges and high-voltage ignition fault currents in a high-temperature, fuel-vapor-rich environment that can cause catastrophic engine explosions.
When one of our engineers had CSST installed during a home renovation, he went looking for an aftermarket retrofit shield for it and found that none existed. So we built one.
PYROTHOR’s FLEX-SHUNT jacket technology is the world’s first and only retrofit, flexible, high-temperature, high-voltage, fire and lightning-shielding solution for all CSST brands — any type, any make. As a startup, we operate with a limited staff. The best way to contact us for all inquiries — including but not limited to sales, licensing, and product development — is via email. We will do our best to respond to every legitimate inquiry as promptly as possible. If you must speak with someone directly, please include your contact number in your email, and we will return your call at the earliest opportunity.
